International standard identifier ISIL

ISIL-code - international standard identifier for libraries and other organizations that creates resources and provides information services has been introduced in the Republic of Belarus since 2010. ISIL-code is presented in the standard ISO 15511 as a tool for the integration of organizations into a single global system of information exchange. ISIL-code is created for identification of libraries and institutions with a view to facilitate access to their records, documents and services.

ISIL-code is the identifier of a variable length and is designed for 12 characters, such as Arabic numerals (0 to 9), letters and special characters (slash, hyphen, colon). As a rule ISIL-code consists of two components separated by a hyphen: country code, which is marked by two letters of the Latin alphabet and library identifier represented in alphanumeric terms, for example BY-HM0001. In cases where the ISIL-code is written, printed or otherwise visually presented, the letters ISIL, separated from the identifier by a space, must precede it: ISIL BY-HM0001.
 

Using ISIL-code, one can:

• communicate with publishers and their suppliers at national and international levels;

• issue / receive documents for temporary use of the  interlibrary loan service;

• participate in the formation of national and international catalogs;

• subscribe to the library sources.

ISIL-code may be assigned to any library or organization that is involved or wants to enter into an international library system of information exchange or the international bookselling. An assigned ISIL-code will ensure the identification of the organization within its existence period.

Internationally, registration and support of ISIL are provided by Danish Agency for Libraries and Media. Its role is to promote and control the use of ISIL-codes and information support of the national agencies for the registration and support of ISIL-codes. In December, 2009 the National Library of Belarus was registered as a National Agency ISIL-codes in Belarus and today provides assignment and administration of it.
